Head units designed to play music off portable media players or SD cards aren’t anything new, but Sony caught our eye by designing a head unit that incorporates a PMP in an interesting way. You can’t really call the DSX-S100 mechless, like other players from Alpine, Kenwood or Pioneer. It doesn’t have a mechanized disc reader, but it does have a mechanical compartment that pops open to hold your iPod or PMP. Called the TuneTray, it keeps the front of your dash free of wires and keeps your player out of your cupholder. Once you connect your device, the tray slips back into the unit letting you access your media through the head unit. Other technologies built into the DSX-S100 include Sony’s DM+Advanced, ZAPPIN and Quick-BrowZer. You can also upgrade the head unit with separate satellite and HD Radio receivers. The DSX-S100 will be available in June 2010 for about $150.
