CLK Cabriolet: Reliable lightning protection with the roof closed In a thunderstorm, the occupants of a Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Cabriolet with the roof closed are as well protected against lightning as passengers in cars with a fixed roof. This is shown by an extensive series of studies conducted on behalf of Mercedes-Benz by the Institute of High-Voltage Technology at the Technical University of Berlin.
When lighting strikes, the up-to-date steel/aluminium structure of the CLK roof, each of whose main mountings is connected to the bodyshell at three attachment points, screens the interior from the powerful electrical field. The longitudinal and transverse struts of the roof structure act as a Faraday cage which allows electrical current to be conducted away on the outside, protecting the interior. This principle was discovered by the British physicist Michael Faraday (1791-1867) in the 19th Century, and all modern lightning protection systems are still based on it.
During the test series in the laboratory of the Institute of High-Voltage Technology in Berlin, scientists used powerful condensers connected in series to generate several dozen lightning strikes over the roof of the CLK Cabriolet, reaching discharge voltages of up to 1.4 million volts.
Measurement of the electrical fields in the interior of the Cabriolet demonstrated the protective effect of the closed roof structure as a Faraday cage. The lightning strike was conducted to earth via the roof struts, bodyshell and tyres.
Thanks to this reliable screening, the onboard electronics of the CLK Cabriolet also proved to be unaffected by the powerful electromagnetic field generated by the lightning strike in every test.
More than two million lighting strikes are unleashed during thunderstorms in Germany, Austria and Switzerland each year, most of them during the months of June, July and August. Every hour approx. one million lightning strikes occur worldwide.
